- Eddie's "JAPAN WAY"- 2013 August

As I wrote this column on 2nd August it is approximately 91 days to our historic test match vs. the All Blacks.
It is a great initiative to invite the All Blacks to play in Japan on their way to Europe and the JRFU must be applauded for their foresight.
The All Blacks are one of the greatest sporting teams in the world winning over 78% of their test match. In fact, in their last 50, they have won 90%.
Their average winning margin vs. Japan is 94 points, playing predominantly their B team. Not great history!!
So how do we prepare? As a squad we have only 8 days together, 1.5-day mini camp twice during the Top League and then 5 days before the game.
A test match against the All Black is played at a speed of about 90 meters per minute, but the Top League is about 65 meters per minute. So the adjustment for the players is enormous.
I have just visited Abashiri, a Rugby camp town in the northern island of Hokkaido. The level of preparation of the Top League sides has improved very well. Players look better muscled, are better conditioned and playing harder. The Top League teams must be congratulated on this but we still have a long way to go. So the players who are in consideration to play against the All Blacks must do extra Strength, Power, Speed and high intensity running to be in the shape we need to perform and beat the All Blacks.
The game of international rugby is becoming more and more physical so our ability to keep developing in this area is crucial for the development of the national team.
The new scrum laws will bring more intensive contest so the physicality will again increase.
This is Japan's challenge. We have a competitive edge in our attack and game fitness, but unless we can compete physically our competitive edge cannot be seen.
I'm confident we can beat the All Blacks if our physical condition is good!
Very exciting.
