- Eddie's "JAPAN WAY"- 2014 May

Beating Hong Kong in the last Asian 5 Nations Cup game (Rugby World Cup 2015 Asian Qualifier) at the National Stadium on 25 May allowed us to achieve our first goal to qualify for the Rugby World Cup 2015. Everything we do from now on is about preparing to win at the Rugby World Cup where our target is Quarter Final.

Friday night’s game, Lipovitan D Challenge Cup 2014, against Samoa is an example of that. It was great to win but we experimented with our selection and tactics with an eye to the Rugby World Cup. We played Tamura at 12 and tried to do all of our kicking from that position and Matsushima at 13 to see if he could be a back up to Male Sau in that position. Both were successful.

Apart from that, Friday night’s game was a historical event for 2 reasons. Firstly, we broke the Japan record for most consecutive wins by 7 and Kin-chan (Ono) becoming the highest capped player for Japan. He is an absolute Samurai---he puts his body on the line every time and plays with skill and passion.

Lastly, it was fantastic to see 8,500 spectators out there supporting loudly and chanting “Nippon” which definitely helps lift the players, but for Italy on 21 June, we need 20,000.
Ouen onegaishimasu!
