- Eddie's "JAPAN WAY"- 2014 January

Well done to Panasonic Wild Knights for setting the benchmark for Japan Rugby.
Well organised, thoughtful, fit and physical – congratulation to the coaching staff and the players for a fine season. The Strength and Conditioning work by Strength & Fitness Coach Ashley Jones has been particularly impressive. For the rest of the Top League teams, they need to find their own competitive edge – so honest reflection is needed.
In general, most Top League teams train harder now, but not necessarily better. So many foreign players come here and become slower worn down by the long tedious training sessions. To improve your skill and game fitness you must train above game speed and intensity. When more teams train like this the standard will improve enormously.
Last stages for selection – just the semi-final and final of the Japan National Championship to observe for our important RWC 2015 Qualifying games. Having Fumi, Shota, Haru playing super rugby is a bonus in terms of gaining international experience. Winning World Cup games, experience is a massive winning factor, what allows players to cope with the do or die nature of the RWC. But players must also be keen to improve and learn. Every player in Japan can improve with better preparation. Getting up each morning at 5:30 am is part of this. We call it Headstart – as we are trying to get a Headstart on the rest of the world. At training we need to win every day.
That is the JAPAN WAY.
