エディー・ジョーンズが語るJAPAN WAY（9月）

ジャパンラグビー トップリーグのシーズンが再び始まりました。日本代表の立場から各試合を見ていくと、多くの良い事柄が私の目に引き、嬉しく思いました。

まず、秩父宮ラグビー場に多くのお客様が足を運んでくれたことです。ラグビーはファン層を拡大する必要があり、高いレベルのトップリーグは間違いなくより多くのお客様の足をラグビー場へと向かわせるでしょう。2019年に日本で開催されるラグビーワールドカップに向けて機運を高めていく中で、トップリーグの試合が盛り上がって欲しいのです。

二つ目は、全てのトップリーグチームのフィジカルレベルが昨年の同時期よりもかなり高くなっていました。選手たちはより筋肉質になり、よりフィットネスが高くなり、そして、ゲームスピードもより速くなっていました。全てのトップリーグチームのコーチの功績を讃えたいと思います。私たちは確実に正しい方向に向かっています。

三つ目に嬉しかった事は、ほとんどの日本代表選手たちが国代表らしいプレーをしていたことです。優れたパフォーマンスというのは、水道の蛇口を開けたり閉めたり簡単にできる習慣ではありません。日本で最高の選手である彼らはトップリーグでのプレーを通じて、日本ラグビーのあるべき基準を示さなくてはなりません。

NECの田村は際立っており、ヤマハ発動機の五郎丸は安定感があり、サントリーの小野は鋭く、同じサントリーの日和佐には素早さがあり、パナソニックのホラニはパワフルなプレーをしていました。それは他の代表選手たちも同様です。彼らにはこの先の数試合で、今よりもさらに良いプレーをしてもらわなければなりません。11月2日にニュージーランド代表（オールブラックス）とのテストマッチ（リポビタンＤチャレンジカップ２０１３）が控えており、それに向けて準備しなければならないからです。この試合は私たちの現在地を測る指標となります。

オールブラックスは手強い相手ですが、勝てない相手ではありません。どんなチームにも弱みがあり、私たちの独自のプレースタイル「Japan Way」でその弱みを露呈させることを狙っています。

最高のチームになるには勇気が必要です。新しい事に挑戦をする勇気です。勇気とスキル、タフネス（強靱な心）があれば、どんなことでも可能です。私たちには多くの勇気が必要です。私たちはスキルもタフさもあります。ですから、思考と行動の両面で勇気を持つことが、私たちのプライオリティーとなります。
「Japan Way」を実践するには、最初の1分からメンタル的にもフィジカル的にも勇気が必要です。これを実行すれば、オールブラックスは秩父宮を埋め尽くした満員のお客様の前でショックを受けることでしょう。

With the Top League back in full swing, it was pleasing from a national point of view that a number of areas really stood out in a positive manner.

Firstly, it was great to see so many spectators at Prince Chichibu Memorial Rugby Stadium. Rugby needs to increase its spectators base and the good level of Top League absolutely encourages more spectators to attend. As we build to the Rugby World Cup 2019, we want Top League games to be buzzing.

Secondly, the physical level of all the Top League teams has improved considerably from this time last year. Players have better musculature, are fitter, and the game speed has increased. Well done to all the Top League coaching staff. It is certainly a step in the right direction.

Thirdly, most of the national team squad members played like international players. Good performance is a habit you cannot turn it on and off like a tap, so we need our best players setting the standard of rugby in Japan in the Top League.

Tamura of NEC was outstanding, Goromaru of Yamaha was solid, Kosei Ono of Suntory was sharp, Hiwasa of Suntory was quick, Holani of Panasonic was powerful ~ and it goes on. We need them to play even better over the next few games as we get ready for our test-match game vs. the All Blacks on 2nd November. The All Blacks match is a benchmark game.

The All Blacks are a formidable team but NOT unbeatable. Every team has a weakness, and with our unique style of play, the Japan Way, we intend to explore their weakness.

You have to have courage to be the best - you have to have courage to do new things, but if you have courage, skill and toughness, anything can happen.
We need plenty of courage, we are skilful and we are tough, so courage in thought and action is a priority. Playing the Japan Way needs players to play the first minute with courage mentally and physically. Do this and the All Blacks will be in for a shock in front of a full-house "Chichibunomiya".
